The Reason Murderbot's Tone Feels Off
A confession: This dispatch will not be coming to you from one of the long-devout Martha Wells faithful. I'm a convert, a curious reader who turned to Wells' The Murderbot Diaries series after reading my colleague Meghan Herbst's fantastic 2024 profile of the author, which left me questioning who would be challenged with taking on the series' title character in Apple TV's adaptation and why it was Alexander Skarsgård. Put differently, I wanted to know if the actor known for playing blood-sucker Eric Northman in True Blood and a berserker prince in The Northman would be the right fit to play a security robot, or SecUnit, struggling with social awkwardness after hacking his own "governor module" to give himself the freedom to not obey human orders. If the weird affection he forms for the scientists he's charged with protecting, and the stunted way he goes about showing it, would translate to Murderbot. After watching the first episodes of the show, which debuts Friday on Apple TV, I got my answers--and found myself asking a lot more questions.
What to Know About the Apple Class Action Lawsuit Settlement--and How You Can File a Claim
Apple users--specifically those who use Siri through products such as Macbooks, iPhones, and Apple TVs--may be entitled to make a claim after Apple's class action lawsuit settlement, worth 95 million dollars, regarding the voice-activated assistant. The settlement comes from a lawsuit filed in 2021 by Californian Fumiko Lopez, who claimed that Apple, via Siri, conducted "unlawful and intentional interception and recording of individuals' confidential communications without their consent and subsequent unauthorized disclosure of those communications." "Apple intentionally, willfully, and knowingly violated consumers' privacy rights, including within the sanctity of consumers' own homes where they have the greatest expectation of privacy," the lawsuit stated. "Plaintiffs and Class Members would not have bought their Siri Devices, or would have paid less for them, if they had known Apple was intercepting, recording, disclosing, and otherwise misusing their conversations without consent or authorization." In 2019, Apple published a statement titled "Improving Siri's privacy protections," in which they said they hadn't "been fully living up" to their "high ideals" and vowed to issue improvements.

I like big buttons and I cannot lie--this Apple TV remote is fly
Before remotes became sleek slabs of glass with touchpads and voice assistants, they used to click. And we liked the way that felt. The Function101 Button Remote for Apple TV brings back that retro feel--no Siri, no swipey-swipes, just big, satisfying buttons that do exactly what you expect. If you've ever flipped through channels with your thumb while eating cereal on a Saturday morning, this remote will feel like home. You don't need to learn new gestures, and it ditches the voice command gimmicks in favor of an intuitive layout that gives you quick control over volume, power, and navigation.

March Madness TV setups for the ultimate viewing experience
March Madness season means it's time to upgrade your TV setup. Watching March Madness games is one of the highlights of basketball season, but if you don't have a great TV setup, you're not truly experiencing the games as much as you could. A better setup for March Madness means you can watch the games more clearly and hear everything the coaches, fans, players and refs are yelling. A new TV with crystal-clear picture and sound is a must. Or, you can upgrade the TV you currently have with a new soundbar system and a streaming device like Roku Sticks, Apple TV or an Amazon Fire Stick.
Abode home security systems can now be controlled from your Apple TV
The DIY smart home and home security specialists at Abode Systems have released their first Apple TV app, along with an upgraded version of the company's existing Android TV app. The new software promises to make it easier for Abode users to control their self-installed systems from their couch, using their TV or set-top box remote. The company already has apps for smartphones, smart watches, computers, and tablets. Users will be able to manage their security system and control their smart devices (lights, thermostat, from the Abode dashboard, but the primary attraction will be the ability to view live feeds from up to four Abode security cameras and/or video doorbells on their connected TVs. You can also watch recorded clips, and with AC-powered cameras that have 24/7 recording enabled (more on this in a bit), you can scrub back and forth along a 10-day timeline and jump to specific events.

Best streaming devices of 2025: Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, or Google TV?
An external streaming device is the best way to access online video services without replacing your entire TV. By plugging one of these devices into your TV's HDMI port, you'll be able to use apps like Netflix and Hulu, possibly with a faster and smoother experience than your TV's built-in software. But between Roku, Fire TV, Google TV, and Apple TV, picking a streaming device can be overwhelming. We've reviewed them all and have come up with a list of recommendations for every need and budget. As TechHive's resident cord-cutting expert, I've reviewed practically every streaming device that's come out over the past decade, and I've been a cord-cutter myself since 2008.

How to Watch Apple's iPhone 16 Launch Event, and What to Expect
If tech news is feeling a little repeaty, with new phones and gadgets arriving in a seemingly endless stream over the last few weeks, know that it's not Groundhog Day. But it is almost time for yet another Apple event where new hardware will show up. At an event at its company headquarters next week, Apple will unveil the iPhone 16, as well as the next Apple Watch and (most likely) some AirPods. But like most tech events these days, much of the presentation is likely to revolve around artificial intelligence. The promotional image for next Monday's event is an Apple logo wrapped in a colorful glow with all the shades commonly used for Siri, Apple's digital assistant.
Rashida Jones Wonders What Makes Us Human
For someone who used to ride a school bus with Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, Rashida Jones is remarkably earthbound. Growing up in Los Angeles, the daughter of the "Mod Squad" actor Peggy Lipton and the legendary music producer Quincy Jones, she was so ensconced in the world of mega-celebrity that it took a while for her to realize that the people surrounding her--Frank Sinatra, Sidney Poitier, Michael Jackson--were as iconic as they were. That heady milieu would cause most young people (say, her bus-mates) to lose themselves in the fame bubble. Instead, Jones did her homework and got into Harvard, where she studied religion and philosophy, before finding fame on her own, on the sitcoms "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." In many of her roles, as in her life, she projects a dry, discerning intelligence that cuts through the absurdity surrounding her. She is a very good guide to the world of the famous.
